WANDA Recognized in Arts Community

COLUMBUS, Ohio

The Greater Columbus Arts Council (GCAC) has awarded Columbus artist Mike George a Funds for Artists grant in recognition of his invention WANDA.

WANDA — Wireless Audio for Nearby Drivers' Attention — is a 6-foot-long baton capped with wireless speakers, capable of illumination at night. Each end carries LED lights and reflective material, and the paired speakers play music chosen by the user.

It was created as a means to maximize my visibility to nearby vehicles when walking the streets, particularly in areas devoid of sidewalks and typically sparse of pedestrian activity. Over time, WANDA has evolved into a sort of political creed - a firm rejection of our nation’s stubborn addiction to its cars - a way to instigate a change in our culture that prioritizes pedestrian safety, elevates the dignity of walking in our city, and improves access to more parts of our city.

WANDA helps keep pedestrians safe on the street, enriches their commute, and empowers their presence in our communities. And she reminds me that the quest for a safer, more vibrant city starts with us.

The Greater Columbus Arts Council champions and elevates the arts and cultural expression of Greater Columbus. Learn more at gcac.org.

GCAC's Funds for Artists program assists working artists with making new art, growing artistic skills, and marketing to a broader audience.
