Interview Prep
Enroute to Cambridge, Ohio, Mike discusses his ongoing job search and recent interviews, sharing details about 3 separate interviews scheduled this week - one with a natural gas distributor, one with a previous employer in Montreal, and one with an insurance company. He also touches upon a recent breakup and some of the associated fallout.
Good morning, this is Mike George coming at you from along Interstate 70, right between Wheeling and Cambridge, Ohio, on this lovely winter day. I am currently en route to an interview in Cambridge for a gas company called Bi-Con Engineering, and I’m feeling really optimistic about it. I’m all 'gussied up' in a bow tie this morning—mostly because I think I left all my regular ties back in Portland with Leah, which is a whole ongoing saga, but we’re focusing on the positive today. I’ve even got Mickey in the back keeping an eye on things.
This job would involve a lot of the same work I’ve done before, but transitioning from the electric power industry to the gas industry offers a bit of novelty that I’m excited about. This is actually my second interview with them; I already met the Vice President, so today I’ll be sitting down with the managers I’d actually be working for. It’s been a busy week for my career — I had an interview Monday with CEATI International in Montreal, where I’ve worked before. They seem to love me, and while it pays a bit less than the gas company, the experience in the electric power research community would be a huge plus. I’ve also got an interview tomorrow in Columbus with New York Life for a financial position, though I’d really prefer to stay in engineering. After being unemployed for over a year, I’m just restless to get back to work and be a productive citizen again.
On the personal side, things are starting to look up. Relations with Leah are 'normalizing' through emails and messages, and I’ve reached out to Matt as well. He’s a 'tougher nut to crack,' but I want him to know I’m here and I wish nothing but the best for him.
As I drive, I want to remind everyone to be careful with this winter driving. The roads are clear right now, but you never know when there’s going to be 'drama' on the road—and if my life lately has taught me anything, it’s that you have to be ready for drama and just roll with the punches. I’m approaching the I-77 interchange now, so I need to focus on these maneuvers and get off the phone. Wish me luck as I go 'kick some butt' at this interview! You all have a good day and take care of each other."
